  3.     We long-suffering Angelenos had a right to expect more from
  4. our public servants than that piece of foolishness adopted by
  5. the south coast air-quality-management district (ENVIRONMENT,
  6. March 27). The 5,500-page plan is surrealistic: a 70% cut in
  7. smog-producing emissions by the year 2000 and electric cars by
  8. 2020. It would be remarkable if we could achieve these goals.

  12.     With 20 million-plus autos belching fumes into the air of
  13. California, it's about time we tried to solve the problem of
  14. air pollution. However, it might be easier to reverse the course
  15. of the sun than switch over to relatively clean methanol or
  16. electric cars. But what if it worked? You could see the sky! You
  17. could breathe the air again! And with electric autos you could
  18. even hear the birds.
